Dialectical Behavior Skills (DBT-Informed)
Building Emotional Resilience
At Desert Oasis Recovery, we incorporate dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)-informed practices to help residents build emotional awareness, reduce impulsive behavior, and improve relationships. While we are not a DBT-only program, our clinical team is trained to use DBT tools that are highly effective for individuals with co-occurring emotional and behavioral challenges.
Four Core Skill Areas
Our DBT-informed approach teaches clients to develop practical tools across four key areas:
- Mindfulness: Staying present and aware of thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations without judgment.
- Distress Tolerance: Navigating crisis situations or emotional pain without resorting to harmful behaviors.
- Emotion Regulation: Recognizing and managing intense emotions in a safe, productive way.
- Interpersonal Effectiveness: Learning to ask for needs, set boundaries, and maintain healthy relationships.
These skills are introduced in both individual sessions and structured group formats, then practiced in daily life within the safety of the residential environment.
Why It Matters in Recovery
DBT skills are particularly beneficial for clients who:
- Have experienced trauma or emotional dysregulation
- Struggle with self-harm or anger
- Have difficulty navigating relationships or expressing needs
- Feel overwhelmed by cravings, mood swings, or shame
By learning these skills, residents begin to experience a sense of control and self-respect, key ingredients for sustainable recovery.
Real-Life Application
We don’t just teach DBT concepts — we make them real. Staff use DBT language and principles during coaching moments, conflict resolution, and daily routines. Clients are encouraged to apply their DBT tools in community living, therapy groups, and individual decision-making throughout their stay.
